Strategies and Self-Evaluation

How can you monitor physical activity?

  • You can use an exercise log to record routines and monitor gains or problem areas.

  • Using a pedometer can provide a sense of sedentary behavior.

  • Use an app on a smart phone to track activity.

  • A diary can also help monitor behavior outside of the exercise routine.

Why monitor Physical activity?

  • It can be motivational to know that you are progressing.

  • It can be an early warning system for failure to achieve goals due to overtraining or under-training.

  • It provides a method to reflect on and prioritize values.

  • It can help further define goals

  • It can help you plan on ways to circumvent the obstacles to regular exercise behavior.

What strategies can help reduce sedentary behavior?

One of the easiest ways to improve your health is by increasing the amount of physical activity you perform throughout the day. Try these basic steps to help reduce sedentary behaviors and get more physical activity:

  •  Take the stairs as often as possible.

  • During commercial breaks do exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, leg lunges, and leg squats

  • Do yard work or housework

  • Don’t use the drive-up window for the bank, fast food, coffee, etc. Park the car and walk to the establishment.

  • Involve the whole family and take group walks before or after dinner.

  • Stand or walk during phone calls, rather than sit

  • Go to the park with your dog or children
